The Homestretch

one year ago

It’s the homestretch! Can you see the light at the end of the tunnel? Many of you are probably completing your last few LOOONGGG training runs in the next few weeks. We like to think of this as a “dress rehearsal” for the big day. Here are a few suggestions to make the most of your preparation:

1. Timing is Everything

Try to start your long runs at about 6:30 in the morning. This is when the Joplin Memorial Marathon and Half Marathon begins. We know this might mess up your “sleeping in” on the weekend. But, our bodies are typically on a routine, and you need to know how your body feels at this time of day.

2. Get your Comfy on

For your last few long runs, you should wear the same running shoes that you will wear on race day. The typical “life” of a pair of running shoes is about 300 - 500 miles. If your shoes are at the end of this life cycle, break in a new pair of sneakers on your long runs so they will be ready to go for race day. Never consider a new pair of shoes for a race day.

Consider wearing your race day top and bottoms too. This will help you realize if they feel “good,” and don’t cause any chafing for that long distance. Joplin can be very humid in late May, and there is nothing worse than the combination of humidity, sweat and chaffed skin!

3. Drink it in!

Plan your hydration! Take a look at the Joplin Memorial Marathon race routes and try to hydrate yourself at similar mile markers as the planned hydration stations. Enlist your family and friends as training route support, and have them be your drink stops along the way. If you plan using gels as nutritional supplements during the race, sample those as you train so you will know what flavors taste good and help energize you.

4. Feed your Body

Finally, and arguably most importantly, continue eating a healthy meal plan. Nutrition is the key to keeping your body in check. Check out our helpful guide, 5 EATING TIPS to stay on track the next few weeks.
