One of the friendliest cities in America; Joplin, Missouri, is your host for two days of competitive running, running related events and entertainment for the entire family.
The Joplin Memorial Marathon was created as a way to honor the 161 people who lost their lives in the May 22, 2011 tornado and to provide hope to the Joplin community while at the same time staging a first class event that runners will come back for again and again.
All races will begin in front of Memorial Hall at 8th & Joplin Street in downtown Joplin. Joplin Street is one block directly west of Main Street.
Marathon : The Freeman Health System Marathon presented by Johnson, Vorhees & Martucci will be held Saturday May 20, 2017 beginning at Memorial Hall. Late sign up and packet pickup can be done at the Runner Expo Friday May 19, 2017 at MSSU Beimdiek Student Center from noon-8:00 P.M.
5 Person Marathon Relay: The Marathon relay will be held Saturday May 20, 2017 beginning at Memorial Hall. Late sign up and packet pickup can be done at the Runner Expo Friday May 19, 2017 at MSSU Beimdiek Student Center from noon-8:00 P.M.
Half Marathon: The Half Marathon will be held Saturday May 20, 2017 beginning at Memorial Hall. Late sign up and packet pickup can be done at the Runner Expo Friday May 19, 2017 at MSSU Beimdiek Student Center from noon-8:00 P.M.
5K: The Empire 5K will be held Saturday May 20, 2017 beginning at Memorial Hall. Late sign up and packet pickup can be done at the Runner Expo Friday May 19, 2017 at MSSU Beimdiek Student Center from noon-8:00 P.M.
Kid’s Run: The Sign Designs Kid’s Run is a one mile run that will be held Friday May 19, 2017 at 5:45 P.M. from Memorial Hall. Running, walking, skipping is all permitted. A parent can run with their child for no cost. Parents will need to use the checkin system (TBA) and sign a waiver. Kids’ late sign up and packet pickup can be done at the Runner Expo Friday May 19, 2017 at MSSU Beimdiek Student Center from noon-3:00 P.M. and at Joplin Memorial Hall from 4:30-5:45 P.M. Joplin Memorial Marathon sponsor, Sign Designs, will help the kids make an award after they finish running.
Walk of Silence: The Walk of Silence is an event open to the community at no charge. 161 banners honoring the victims killed in the May 22, 2011 Tornado will line Joplin Street from 9th to 20th street. At 7:30 P.M. on Friday May 19, 2017 this stretch of road will be closed to traffic and we will have a time of remembrance and silence for people to walk the corridor of banners. No pets please, children are welcome, we just ask that everyone be respectful of this time. The road will open back up to traffic at 8:30 P.M.
Minimum age for participation in the Marathon is 15 years old, 12 years for the Half Marathon. It is the responsibility of the parent(s) to determine whether you feel your child is properly trained and physically capable of successfully completing this event. Kids under 18 years of age are eligible to participate in the Kid's Run.
Walkers are welcome on all courses as long as they can finish within cut off times.
Course closures will be a rolling cut off based on finish time. If you fall behind pace of rolling closure you may chose to be brought back in an official race vehicle (recommended) or continue on your own, however you will be officially out of the race at this point with no support.
There will be NO EXCEPTION to cut off times.

Finish line refreshments and admission to post race party area
Marathon, Half Marathon, and 5K awards will be given for the top three overall finishers plus the 1st-3rd place male and female finishers in the following age divisions:
12 & under (5k race only)
13-15 (5k race only)
16-19 (5k race only)
19 & Under
70 & Over Masters 40 and older (1st only)
A Note About Official Times for Prizes and Awards: There will be no duplication of trophies or plaque awards. Winners must verify their times and age group and pick up their award immediately after the race at the designated tent. There will not be an awards ceremony for any race.The results for the overall winners will be based on the actual order of finish (“gun time”). Age category awards will be based on chip time.
(noncompliance with the following may result in immediate disqualification) Unregistered runners, unauthorized vehicles, bicycles, roller skates, roller blades, skateboards and runners with pets are strictly prohibited to assure runner safety and to comply with liability insurance requirements. Strollers and baby-joggers are only allowed for the 5k race and must start in the back. Finally, any type of support or unauthorized pacing will not be allowed.
We will host the race under most weather conditions: rain or shine. Extreme conditions or unsafe weather (lighting, extreme temperatures, etc) may warrant a cancellation or rescheduling of the event. This is at the discretion of the race director and will be made based on the safety of the racers, volunteers, and spectators. Every effort will be made to continue with the race. There is limited parking availability near the start/finish line. We strongly suggest you familiarize yourself with the area. Remember that we do have a shuttle bus system constantly circulating between the start/finish area and the hotels, so we encourage you to make use of that service.
